We’re talking about side hustles, the part-time job/money-making hobby trend that’s made entrepreneurs of each of us. Part of the reason people are turning to side hustles is simply economic — they might have student loans to pay off or need extra money for something else. But another big motivator comes from the drive to entrepreneurship itself.
Research from 2015 showed that even then there were 27 million Americans, about 14 percent of the workforce, starting or running new businesses. The majority of the more than 200,000 people surveyed in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, a study sponsored by Babson College and Baruch College, thought conditions were ripe to start a new venture.
One reason why side hustles are attractive is that they put power back in our hands as workers. They don’t just bring in extra money — they also grant us autonomy to manage our own affairs in a way that our day jobs often don’t. And what’s more, they can provide an opportunity to figure out what we really love to do, then fine-tune a way to make money at it. As they say, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day.
